Poultry mill in Liberia produces 3,000 chicks a week

The BRAC poultry and feed mill in Liberia produces 3,000 day old chicks every week supporting the poultry industry, creating value chains and employing 13 local staff. There is a drastic need in Liberia – especially as the country recovers from the devastating Ebola outbreak – to increase nutritional intake for families and improve incomes for women farmers.

Mofizur Rahman the project manager says “the essence of the farm is not limited to the provision of direct employment for Liberians bit also stimulates self-employment in the poultry sector.” Women who purchase day old chicks from the mill are supported to use farming practices that stimulate higher yields and increase their profits ensuring they can continue growing their small businesses.

Rahman continued, “we are in a position to achieve the task of providing necessary inputs to poultry farmers and also play a key role in the production and improvement of poultry in the country.” Rahman and his team have delivered a mill that rears brown laying chickens who produce eggs, hatches quality day-old chickens for sale, makes high quality feeds and they are building distribution and marketing channels. Hopeful that the mill will have a multiplier effect by stimulating the corn industry to support making feeds Rahman doesn’t rule out the impact this could have on the gross domestic product of the country.
